DATA Applauds Unanimous Senate Support for Budget Amendment

03.23.07

Today the United States Senate unanimously passed an amendment to restore $2.2 billion in funding for the International Affairs budget. DATA applauds the Senate’s support for promoting peace and fighting poverty.

"We are grateful to Senators Smith and Dodd for leading this effort," said Tom Hart, director of government relations for DATA. "This part of the budget provides critical funding to combat HIV/AIDS and to promote economic growth in some of the world’s poorest places."

The President requested $36.5 billion for International Affairs, or “the 150 account”. The Senate Budget Committee, however, provided $34.3 billion, $2.2 billion below the President’s request. This amendment fully restores the 150 Account to the President’s request level by providing an increase of $2.2 billion to the 150 allocation.

"America’s engagement in the fight against global poverty deserves strong support. Funding these programs is not only the right thing to do, it's also the smart thing to do. In an increasingly dangerous world, it’s a strategic necessity," said Hart.
